The Integrating Trees Network is hosting a day’s event on 6th August in both Biggar and West Linton to showcase how growing trees can provide many benefits for farm businesses.
The first part of the day starts at 10:30am at Skirling Village Hall, where SRUC farming expert Davy McCracken will share his practical experience and knowledge on the role trees play in building resilient and sustainable farm enterprises.
Thereafter, Andrew and Jayne Adamson will welcome everyone to Netherurd Farm in West Linton where they produce prime beef and lamb, whilst also integrating award-winning woodlands into their farm business. Mr McCracken said:
"I'm genuinely excited about this event and the opportunity to share my experiences with incorporating trees into a hill farming operation.
“Farmers are savvy entrepreneurs who constantly seek ways to make their farms more robust and sustainable. Trees can play a key role in helping achieve that goal. “The open discussion segment at the village hall promises to be engaging and a fantastic chance to listen to a variety of perspectives and experiences."
At Netherurd Farm, Andrew and Jayne Adamson will introduce guests to their farming operation and explain how their woodlands are creating multiple benefits for their business.
Mr Adamson added:
“Planting trees on our farm has brought so many advantages - from providing shelter and shade for our livestock to improving biodiversity, and even creating a new income stream through timber sales.
“It’s been a journey with challenges, but the positive impact on our farm’s productivity and resilience has made it well worth the effort.”
A representative from Scottish Forestry will also be present at the events to answer questions about funding opportunities and the initial steps for woodland creation. The Integrating Trees Network is a farmer-led initiative supported by both Scottish Forestry and the Scottish Government. It aims encourage more farmers and crofters to take advantage of planting trees.
The event is free to attend. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided; please bring your own lunch. Booking a place is free for the Your Farm’s Future — Trees as an Option & Opportunity event.
