Scottish Forestry and Statutory Consultees Joint Working Agreement

This agreement explains how Scottish Forestry and their Statutory Consultees work together in creating and managing Scotland’s woodlands.

Published: 22 Feb 2025

Why is the agreement needed?

We have a requirement for us to consult with different bodies under some of the legislation we work within.

We need to do this before we can respond to some forestry proposals.

This agreement is the Scottish Forestry and Statutory Joint Working Agreement.

This agreement considers all policies and legislation pertaining to:

  • historic environment
  • biodiversity
  • landscape
  • water

The aim is to promote a more integrated approach, to create and manage Scotland’s forests and woodlands.

The agreement also takes account of other important factors and assets whilst contributing to:

  • economic growth
  • social wellbeing
  • environmental improvements

This agreement also supports consultation on policy development. As well as the implementation of forestry consents and approvals.

This promotes:

  • good working relationships
  • better mutual understanding
  • stronger cooperation
  • clear advice and communication channels

Supporting Woodland Creation in Scotland

A webinar was produced to launch the agreement.

This showcased a good practice case study based on a woodland creation scheme.

It demonstrates how and when to engage with the statutory consultees, ensuring applications are well designed. This:

  • allows owners to meet their management objectives
  • lets the importance of the site be respected
  • ensures applications are processed efficiently
