Making changes to approved felling permissions

Sometimes you might need to change a felling permission. There is a formal process for requesting changes to an approved permission.

Before you request a variation to your felling permission, get in touch with your local Scottish Forestry office. Some changes may not need a formal request.

You can request to vary your entire felling permission or just the conditions.

Changing an entire felling permission

We will consider your variation request if:

  • your plans change before felling starts

  • you discover significant on-site differences that would affect your plans

If your request includes major changes, you may need to complete a new felling permission application.

Fill out an application to change your felling permission. When you finish, submit it to your local office.

Changing a felling condition

We will consider requests to vary the conditions of your felling permission, such as:

  • restocking proposals
  • maintenance proposals

For example, you may choose to restore part or all of the site as part of a peatland restoration project.

We can also extend the compliance date of a condition. For example, if you use Forest Research's Hylobius Management Support System (MSS) to show that a longer fallow period improves the restocking outcome.

Fill out an application to change or revoke a condition on your felling permission. Then submit it to your local office.
