Forestry and Water Scotland initiative

The Forestry and Water Scotland initiative spans the Scottish forestry sector.

The goal is simple. Brings together new and established resources to help forest owners, managers and practitioners follow good forestry practice to improve water management on their sites.

Why is good water management so important?

Good water management helps reduce diffuse pollution risks from forestry operations.

In turn this benefits the forest environment and wider landscape, helps compliance with water regulations and the UK Forestry Standard, and plays a key part in managing a forest sustainably.

The initiative is supported by various organisations involved in Scotland’s forestry sector and by the Diffuse Pollution Management Advisory Group (DPMAG).

This partnership focuses on protecting and improving Scotland's water environment by reducing rural diffuse pollution.

This resource base was launched in January 2017, originally on the Confederation of forest industries (Confor) website.

Good water management in practice

What does good water management in Scotland’s forests look like? We've pulled together some videos showing forestry practitioners in action.

Cultivation

This film presents the water management measures you need to undertake on cultivation sites to reduce diffuse pollution and protect Scotland's water environment.

Harvesting

This film presents the water management measures you need to undertake on harvesting sites to reduce diffuse pollution and protect Scotland's water environment.

Managing Diffuse Pollution

This training film is aimed at forest owners, managers and contractors. Its purpose is to inform the forestry sector about responsible management of silt in forests and woodlands.

Traceless Timber - low impact harvesting and transport

A video from Skogforst's YouTube channel, the central research institute for the Swedish forestry sector. This demonstrates how how machine operators and researchers in Sweden use knowledge and technology to harvest and transport timber without causing damage to soil and water.
