Forestry in Scotland

Forestry in Scotland is overseen by two executive agencies acting on behalf of Scottish Ministers: Scottish Forestry and Forestry and Land Scotland. 

The two agencies have different roles: 

Scottish Forestry 

Role: Regulator and public body for forestry in Scotland.

Responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing forestry policy
  • Supporting and regulating public and private forests
  • Administering grants and felling permissions
  • Promoting sustainable forestry

Forestry and Land Scotland 

Role: Manages Scotland’s nationally owned forests and land on behalf of Scottish Ministers.
