Introduction

The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 commits Scotland to a target of net-zero emissions of all greenhouse gases by 2045.

Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009

This is tougher than a net-zero carbon target, which commits only to balancing carbon dioxide emissions.

We have several obligations under this legislation, which this Net Zero Route Map aims to address.

Route Map versions

This first version of the Route Map will cover the period up to 2030 in line with Scottish Forestry’s Corporate Strategy and Plan 2025 to 2030, with appendices being updated regularly and iteratively.

Corporate Strategy and Plan 2025 to 2030

The full Route Map will start to be revised in 2029, ready for an update for the period covering 2030-2035.

Aside from legal requirements, both the 2023 Corporate Strategy and Plan workshops and Future Working feedback sessions have shown that our people have a desire to act in this space with some urgency.

Topics of discussion were:

  • professional development
  • the desire for a travel hierarchy
  • questions on electric fleet
  • commuting
  • a digital-first strategy
  • estate and procurement changes towards greener alternatives

Many of these topics will be addressed here.

Did you know?

Over the last few years (2021 – 2025), Scottish Forestry has supported the creation of nearly 53,000 hectares of new woodland.

For every 1 hectare of woodland planted it is estimated that at least 6 tonnes of carbon will be sequestered, over a 60-year period.

New woodlands planted over the next decade are expected to sequester up to 6 hundred thousand tonnes of carbon (0.6 megatons) by 2040.
