Ghosts of Pompeii

Pompeii was a busy Roman city located near the Bay of Naples, in southern Italy. On the morning of August 24, 79 AD, the people of the city had no idea that disaster was about to strike.

Quick fact

This ash began to fall on Pompeii, covering everything in a thick blanket. The eruption also sent out hot rocks, lava, and poisonous gas. Many people tried to escape, but the eruption was so sudden and powerful that most of them did not make it out in time.

The tragedy of Pompeii

In addition to the buildings and artwork, archaeologists have discovered the remains of some of the people who lived in Pompeii. 

When the volcanic ash fell, it covered the bodies of the people who were unable to escape. Over time, their bodies decayed, but the ash left behind empty spaces in the shape of their bodies. 

Archaeologists filled these spaces with plaster to create life-like models of the people. These plaster casts help us understand the tragic end of the people who lived in the city.
